Message from ASC CEO Simon Hollingsworth
07 Jun 2013
There has certainly been a lot happening in the last few months! Since my last message the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has released some important pieces of work including:
- the AIS sports science and sports medicine principles, which provide clear guidelines for sporting organisations as they tackle what is a complex but essential part of high performance sport – sports science and sports medicine
- two significant research reports—Market Segmentation for Sport Participation and Validation of the Playing for Life Philosophy—which look at the participation of children in sport.
We also launched the AIS Centre for Performance Coaching and Leadership—one of the centrepieces of Australia’s Winning Edge and launched the second phase of the Pacific Sports Partnerships grants program, an important element of our international sport for development program.
In other news, the Australian Government announced that it would commit $34.9 million to the continuation of the Active After-school Communities program over the 2013–14 year. This is great news for the program and recognises the important role the AASC plays in getting children active.
I‘ve been very pleased in recent weeks to welcome new senior staff to the ASC, with Anthony Moore accepting the role of General Manager of the Participation and Sustainable Sports Division after a successful management career across several sports. We also secured the talents of Angela Ryder and Andrew Logan, who join us in the AIS as Deputy Director of Performance Investment and Deputy Director of Athlete, Coaching and Leadership respectively.
We’re looking forward to having them all onboard and I’m sure that many of you will have an opportunity to meet with them in some capacity over the coming months.
Finally, I’d like to encourage you to check out the ASC’s YouTube channel, which will keep you across some of the activities taking place at the Commission.
