Director, Australian Institute of Sport — Professor Peter Fricker OAM, MBBS, FACSP, FRACP (Hon)
Peter commenced as Director of the Australian Institute of Sport in May 2005. He first came to the AIS in 1981 as a consulting medical officer, and was subsequently promoted to the head of the Sports Medicine program and then to coordinator of Sports Science and Sports Medicine.
Prior to assuming his current position, Peter was Assistant Director and responsible for the technical direction of the Australian Institute of Sport, which included management of the National Talent Identification and Development (then Talent Search) program, the National Sport Science Quality Assurance Program, Athlete Career and Education, National Elite Sports Research Program, Benchmarking, and Special Projects (including Hot Topics seminars and workshops).
Peter is a well-known and highly respected figure of national and international sport, whose approach to his work and the science of sport encapsulates the essence of the AIS. Peter has served the Institute and Australian sport with distinction, and played a critical role in the remarkable success of the AIS and the consequent resurgence of Australia as a sporting power. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1993, and the Australian Sports Medal in 2001.
