12 Sep 2011
The Australian women’s team at the inaugural 3x3 World Youth Challenge in Rimini, Italy have started strongly, recording three wins from their first four matches.
Despite suffering a first-up 19-18 defeat at the hands of the Russian team, the Australians then won their next three matches.
The Australian team of Tessa Lavey (Swan Hill, Victoria), Mikhaela Donnelly (Brisbane, Queensland), Olivia Thompson (Balaklava, South Australia) and Darcee Garbin (Perth, WA) reeled off convincing wins over Tunisia, Greece and Canada to improve to 3-1.
In the opening game, Russia got out to an early lead and Australia had to claw its way back into a high scoring game. The game was decided on possession and from beyond the arc for Russia, with Donnelly scoring eight points for Australia and Thompson six.
The Australian team then bounced back to record a 20-9 win over Tunisia, taking an early and convincing lead and proving far too strong. Australia had a strong inside presence from Garbin and Thompson and some solid perimeter play from Lavey and Donnelly. Lavey was a standout with nine points as Australia’s improved defensive effort sealed the victory. Garbin added six points and Thompson had four.
Australia got out to an early lead against Greece and didn’t look back as they recorded a 19-3 win. Another balanced attack with scoring from all positions was a feature of the Australian game, with Thompson a standout performer shooting a high percentage on the way to eight points and dominating the boards. Garbin chimed in with five points and Lavey had four.
In a tight and physical contest Australia were able to wear the Canadians down and secure the 15-9 win. Australia’s defensive presence was much improved, and a few clutch baskets and free throws sealed the game for Australia. Thompson and Donnelly each had six points.
The Aussies next face England on Saturday in their final Pool 1 game.
