Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) boxers — including members of the Indigenous National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program — have performed impressively at the 2009 Australian Boxing Championships, held at the AIS in Canberra from 3 to 6 December.

Gold medal bouts

  • 48kg elite men: Dylan Perkins (current AIS/NTID) lost the final in a walkover, as he did not make weight on the morning of his bout.
  • 54kg elite men: Brad Hore (Queensland, former AIS) defeated Jason Moloney (Victoria) 7 to 3.
  • 64kg elite men: David Biddle (South Australia, former AIS) lost to Jeff Horne (Queensland) 9 to 1.
  • 69kg elite men: Sam Ah-See (former AIS, current NTID) defeated Brandon Groves (Victoria) 12 to 1.
  • 81kg elite men: Sam Blyth (Western Australia, current AIS/NTID) tied with Steve Lovett (Australian Capital Territory, former AIS) 3:3. Scores were still tied on countback so each of the five judges chose their winner: Sam Blyth.
  • 91kg+ youth male: Gareth Bamin (current AIS/NTID) defeated Hamish Hunt (New South Wales) when the referee stopped the contest in round 2.

NTID gold medallists

  • 57kg junior: Brandon Ogilvie (Western Australia)
  • 91kg youth: Gavin Reid (Australian Capital Territory)

NTID silver medallists

  • 60kg junior: Joseph Nicholls broke his hand in round 1 of the final but still continued on and finished the bout.
  • 54kg youth: Jayden Hansen
  • 60kg youth: Tyrone Polyak

Sam Ah-See was named Best Boxer of the Tournament by the referees and judges.
