AIS results at the boxing world championships

Boxing World Championships - end of Day 8

The last remaining Australian was knocked out of the Boxing World Championships overnight. Damien Hooper (75kg) was defeated by the #3 seeded athlete from Moldova 15:5. Damien held his own in the first round to finish 3:3, but the experience and strength of the opposition showed through in the second and third rounds (6:0, 6:2)

Overall this was a great result for Damien in only his second senior international tournament. Damien finished the Championships with a Top 16 finish. He was also is in the Top 3 of Commonwealth competitors, which stands him in good stead for next year’s Commonwealth Games.

Boxing World Championships - end of Day 6

Australia had 3 boxers competing at the World Championships in Milan, Italy over the weekend. Results are as follows:

Damien Hooper (75kg) defeated M. Bauderlique (France) 12:7

Qamil Balla (64kg) lost to E Kavaliauskas (Lithuania) 20:5

Mostyn Niemann (91kg) lost to S Simmons (Scotland) 11:4

Damien is a current AIS/NTID scholarship holder and is only 17yrs of age. This result puts Damien into the Top 16. There are 62 athletes in his weight division, the biggest of the Championships.

Damien’s next bout will be against #3 seed, Victor Cotiujanschii from Moldova. The 75kg weight division is one of the few divisions where all top 8 seeds have made it to the round of 16. This bout will take place on 8 Sept, approx 11:30pm Canberra time.

Boxing World Championships - Day 3

Overnight at the Boxing World Championships in Milan, Italy Australian (AIS) had 3 athletes competing.

Mostyn Niemann (91kg) defeated Lamin Nyassi from Gambia – Referee Stopped Contest Rd 2 (Mostyn was leading 13:0 when the bout was stopped)

Mark Basile (69kg) lost to Brian Castano (Argentina) 22:8

Ibrahim Balla (57kg) lost to Kevin Rivers (USA) in what looks to have been a tough encounter 22:19

Australia has 3 athletes still in contention:

Qamil Balla (64kg) will box tonight v Lithuania (Lithuania defeated #5 seeded Japan 8:5 in the first round)

Damien Hooper (75kg) will box tomorrow night v France (France defeated KGZ 16:8 in the first round)

Mostyn Niemann (91kg) will box 6 Sept v Stephen Simmons from Scotland (Simmons defeated Kenya 13:3 in the first round)

Boxing World Championships - Day 2

Overnight we had one athlete in action at the Boxing World Championships in Milan, Italy - 17 yr old Damien Hooper in the 75kg weigh category.

Damien defeated his Czech Republic opponent Referee Stopped Contest Injury Rd 3 (RSCI-Rd 3). When the referee stopped the bout Damien was leading 8:3.

This is a great result for Damien in only his second senior international tournament.

Damien will now box Mathieu Bauderlique from France on Saturday. Bauderlique defeated his opponent in the first round 16:8 so it will be a tough encounter.

Tonight will see the final 3 Australians begin their World Championship campaign.

Boxing World Chamionships - Day 1

The Australian Boxing Team (of which all are AIS athletes) had mixed results overnight in Day 1 of the World Championships.

51kg – Andrew Moloney was defeated by Fernando Martinez from Argentina 21:4.

64kg – Qamil Balla won against Mancilla Luis from Bolivia 11:2

A great result for Qamil to get the team off to a winning start. He will now box the Lithuanian athlete who won 8:5 v Japan.

Tonight will see Damien Hooper commence his World Championship campaign against the athlete from Czech Republic.

The World Championships are being held in Milan, Italy.
