Cycling Olympic cycling star Anna Meares gets back on track
30 Jan 2009
AIS track-cycling star Anna Meares is back on the road to success, set to compete in four events at the 2009 Australian Track Championships.
Meares, who won the silver medal in the women’s sprint at the 2008 Olympic Games, is aiming to compete in the sprint, team sprint, keirin and time trial events at the national championships, which will be held in Adelaide on 3–8 February.
It’s been a remarkable comeback for Meares, whose career was threatened by a fractured neck vertebrae earlier this year.
AIS will feature prominently in next month’s Australian Track Championships with young talent like the 19-year-old Jack Bobridge leading the charge.
Bobridge showed great form recently, winning both the time trial and road cycling national under-23 titles. Earlier this month he competed in his first Tour Down Under race, shortly after riding with cycle legend Lance Armstrong.
During the Australian Track Championships Bobridge will be aiming to beat his Australian record of 4 minutes, 18 seconds for the four kilometre individual pursuit.
Other AIS cyclists competing at the national championships include Daniel Ellis, Jason Niblett and Scott Sunderland.
Following the nationals, the cyclists will by looking to compete in UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Copenhagen, which serves as a qualifying event for the World Track Cycling Championships, to be held in Pruszków, Poland on 25–29 March.
