Griffin wins 2009 Fiji Open

17 Jun 2009

AIS Golf rookie professional Matt Griffin has won his first major title by taking out the Vodafone Fiji Open 2009.

Griffin, who now holds a tour card on the Asian tour, was dominant in winning by a comfortable 11 shots on the testing Natadola Bay layout.

Griffin lead from the opening round and never surrendered the advantage despite the tough conditions.

He scored two over par 74 in the final round to finish the four-day tournament on 290.

The AIS golfer was impressed by the Natadola Bay layout.

‘The course is magnificent. There is no doubt that major international championships can be played here.’

Griffin won close to $8000 and claimed a ticket to play in the Asia-Pacific Open Golf Championship Panasonic Open in Japan in September.

New Zealander Brendan Stuart finished in second spot with 301.
