Gymnastics Training

Training

Gymnasts have individual training programs that are discussed weekly by all coaching staff with the Head Coach. The gymnasts are at different levels of skill mastery and competition readiness. The coaches decide which gymnast is prepared and into which competition they will be entered.

Training intensity is increased progressively and is far greater than club-level training. Often the gymnasts are tired and fatigued, but learning how to perform routines safely and effectively while fatigued is all part of the training process.

The gymnastics finals are often after three days of competition when the gymnasts are very tired mentally and physically. However, the finals are where individual medals are won.

The gymnasts train six days a week before and after school or work, for a total of between 26 and 32 hours at the AIS gymnastics hall. The program includes conditioning and stretching for flexibility, strength work, technical apparatus preparation and joint injury-prevention training. Ballet classes are conducted for both males and females.

Training programs for juniors or beginners would be very different to this program. Ask your coach for a program suitable for your level.
