The Australian Hockeyroos women’s hockey team wins the World Cup Qualifier tournament in Santiago, Chile on 3 May.

The Australian Hockeyroos women’s hockey team has scored a major goal by defeating Ireland 4–1 to win the World Cup Qualifier tournament in Santiago, Chile.

It was a fantastic performance by Australia winning four consecutive games against   Chile, Malaysia, Scotland and Ireland — finishing on top of the tournament table with 12 points overall. The Hockeyroos will now take part in the 2010 World Cup which takes place in Rosario, Argentina from 30 August to 12 September.

15 current Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athletes played in the Australian Hockeyroos squad, which included Nic Arrold, Toni Cronk, Sarah O’Connor, Casey Eastham, Kim Walker, Ashleigh Nelson, Kate Hollywood, Madonna Blyth, Shelley Liddelow, Kobie McGurk, Fiona Johnson, Stacia Joseph, Racheal Lynch, Hope Munro and Teneal Attard.

Ashleigh Nelson and Madonna Blyth were the leading scorers for the tournament with 5 goals each.
Nic Arrold was named player of the tournament.

The AIS works in partnership with Hockey Australia in supporting the training and development of talented Australian male and female athletes by providing access to specialist coaching and sports science expertise and state-of-the-art training facilities.

The AIS Hockey program provides a development pathway for talented players to gain valuable experience in high performance competition and to earn selection in the Australian national squad.
