AIS scholarships are selected by the national selectors of Hockey Australia, which include the AIS coaches. The majority of these scholarships are normally selected and offered in November/December of the year prior to the scholarships.

Selection is based on the level of excellence and the development potential of each applicant. Applicants should be competing at national-league or national under-age championship level. The numbers of under-age and senior scholarship holders may vary from year to year in line with the schedule of upcoming international events.

All athletes are encouraged and supported to study or work, as well as to train and compete in their sport.
