Netball - Amy Steel

Amy Steel

Biography

DOB: 07/04/1989
East Melbourne VIC

Amy Steel started playing netball socially, in Year 5 of primary school, after switching from basketball. Her potential to be a truly great netball player became clear during local junior competitions, which then led to her representing Victoria at the state level.

The Australian Institute of Sport took notice of Amy's steady development pathway and offered her a scholarship in 2008. In the same year she won the Gweneth Benzie Award, which is awarded each year to the player with the greatest potential to represent Australia in netball.

Amy has continued to grow and improve as a player. In July this year, she played a key role in helping the Australian women's 21-and-under team to win the World Youth Netball Championship in the Cook Islands. Selectors from the Australian national netball team, the Diamonds, were watching the final and, after seeing Amy's stunning defence, offered her position on the team.

Amy's new role will demand greater responsibility as she faces new and more difficult challenges, particularly in balancing her Diamonds training and matches with tertiary study: a combined degree in Aerospace Engineering and Commerce at Monash University.
