At the highest levels of competition, a softball batter might face a ball pitched towards her at more than 100 kilometres an hour, making reaction time crucial. Softball is quite obviously a highly skilled and technical game, but it equally requires precision timing and power. This is where the specialist techniques of Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) coaching, sports science and sports medicine can give AIS Softball scholarship holders a competitive edge.

About AIS Softball

The AIS and the Australian Softball Federation established the AIS Softball program in 1993. The non-residential program is administered from Brisbane and program staff direct their energies towards training programs that maximise the development and performance of the national women's team.

The program has national training centres in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, with satellite programs in the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia.

Head Coach of the program is Fabian Barlow, a former player who played on the men's international circuit as well as represent his country on the New Zealand Black Sox Team. The Australian Softball Federation coordinates a network of coaches including national training centre coaches and specialist coaches that help Fabian and his team provide the highest level of expert contemporary coaching and training.
