Participation statistics

  • Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS)  - the most current source of participation statistics. 
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics -  (ABS) collects and publishes statistics on a number of issues related to sport and recreation including participation, expenditure, international trade, employment, earnings, volunteers, attendance, retailing, manufacturing and facilities. The following publications can now be downloaded free from the ABS Catalogue.

    Provides a statistical overview of sport and recreation (including gambling) in Australia. Topics covered include output of the sport and recreation sector, employment in sport and recreation, government outlays on recreation, international trade in sport and recreation goods, attendance at sporting events , participation in sporting and leisure activities., time spent, retailing and manufacturing of sport and recreation goods and construction of recreational facilities.

    Children's participation in cultural and leisure activities, Australia.

    Presents data on a range of cultural and recreational activities, including participation in organised sports and use of computers, by children aged from 5 to14 years inclusive. Both state and national data are presented.

Involvement in sport Australia.
ABS Catalogue no. 6285.0
Presents results from the supplementary survey of the March 1993 and 1997 Monthly Population Surveys. Covers playing and non-playing involvements in paid and unpaid capacities. Breakdown is by state, sex, age group, employment status, region, and birthplace. Non playing status is broken down by coach/teacher, referee/umpire, committee member, and administrator.

Contains details on the characteristics of people who attend and frequency of attendance at various sports. Also contains details of those who attend sports whilst staying interstate.

Employment in Sport and Recreation, Australia ABS Cat 4148.0
Contains details from the Census of Population and Housing on the number of people employed in sport, gambling and recreation industries by type of occupation. Includes a breakdown by demographic characteristics

Sport and Recreation Funding by Government, Australia ABS Cat 4147.0
Contains estimates of funding for sport and recreation activities by the three levels of government - federal, state, local in Australia.

Business Sponsorship, Australia
ABS Cat 4144.0
Contains information on the amount of sponsorship and types of activities sponsored by businesses in Australia. Data are classified by sport, art/culture, education, trade shows and other sponsorships and by size of sponsoring business.

  • Sweeney Research publish an annual survey, "Australians and Sport". This survey of 1500 people over the age of 16 in Australian capital cities covers participation, interest, television viewing and sponsorship awareness. There is also a volume that covers recognition of Olympic sponsors and athletes
