Sporting Schools: encouraging children to participate in sport

Children playing cricket and getting active
The Sporting Schools programme is an Australian Government initiative that allows schools and local sporting communities to work closer than ever before to deliver sports-based activities before, during and after school.

Sporting Schools is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to tackle increasing levels of obesity, particularly among children.

One in every four of our kids is overweight or obese.

Regular exercise and good nutrition are crucial in fighting obesity and reducing the risk of kids developing lifestyle-related chronic diseases.

The new Sporting Schools website, which will provide further detail of the programme, will be available from late October 2014.

Registrations will open for schools and sporting partners from February 2015.

The first round of grant funding will allow Sporting Schools to start in Term 3 2015.

More information is available on the Sporting Schools page of the Australian Sports Commission website.
