Involving parents and participants

Clubs are made up of a range of people including supporters, parents, participants and current volunteers. Get to know who you already have in your club so you can identify opportunities to recruit volunteers and helpers to roles, tasks or a roster.

Involving players

With opportunities to develop skills in leadership, social media, coaching and officiating, young people are often keen to support their club. By creating meaningful roles and providing a supportive environment, involving young people can also support succession planning and create future club volunteers. Having participants help also ensures they experience and understand what it takes to run a club and may be possibly recruited as future volunteers.

Ways to include players and young people:

  • Project based roles/tasks
  • Assistant coaches
  • Learning to officiate
  • Communication roles (e.g social media or photography)
  • Dual roles with a friend
  • Roster based tasks (e.g scoring, canteen)
  • Committee or subcommittee roles (e.g player representative, assistant secretary)
  • Have young players help set up and pack away training

Parents

Engaging parents can sometimes be difficult but is a great way to increase your number of helpers, particularly small task-based positions or activities managed by a roster. Think of tasks that are not a regular commitment and where they can help only once or twice a season. To support with the recruitment of parents, make sure to include an initial prompt in your welcome letters and registration process.

Ways to include parents:

  • Roster activities or one off asks (e.g BBQ, canteen, scoring)
  • Pair with a friend to reduce the pressure and to make it more enjoyable
  • Help set up or take a drill at training
  • Project based tasks/roles (e.g registration, uniforms, social event, trophies)
