Course launched to help primary teachers spark a lifelong love of sport

Aussie kids across the country are set to benefit from a free online program aiming to encourage a lifelong engagement in sport and physical activity.

The PE - Essential skills for primary teachers course was launched on Friday by Australian Sports Commission (ASC) CEO Kieren Perkins at the EduTech conference in Melbourne.

The online course has been designed to support teachers to build the skills and confidence to deliver purposeful and engaging physical education.

From educators beginning their journey, through to those looking to refresh their knowledge, teachers can take their PE lessons and planning to the next level with the PE - Essential skills for primary teachers course.

It is packed full of easy-to-use lesson plans and expert tips that will help teachers to deliver fun, safe and inclusive PE- ultimately supporting better health outcomes for kids.

“By building a love for physical activity at an early age, the long-term physical, mental and social benefits are significant,” ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said.

“The Australian Sports Commission wants all primary teachers to feel confident and competent enough to teach physical education. Which is why we are delighted to be launching this new program today.

“Leading into the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane in 2032, we are underway in a green and gold decade of opportunity to bring schools and sports together to help Aussie children get active… We have a unique opportunity to educate, motivate and inspire a generation of students.”

The PE - Essential skills for primary teachers course is available through the ASC’s Australian Sport Learning Centre and aligns with the Australian school curriculum.

Teachers can complete the engaging course in approximately two-and-a-half hours.
