When officiating social participants, it’s important to understand their motivations and needs and adapt your approach, through modified rules, formats or other agreed adjustments.
Social participants are involved in sport for enjoyment, to be with friends and peers, often to get or stay fit. They may participate in several sports, or they may be returning to sport after a long break. Social participants can have a variety of different skill levels, ranging from learners to highly skilled.
Consider individual differences and motivations for participating in social sport competitions when applying the rules and communicating with participants. Offer modified formats and flexible options where participants don’t need to play all year or season long.
